The Beacon Project

Update

Since the beginning of the Beacon Project, our Lodge Beacon Coordinator, Seymour D. Greenstone, PM, has put in weekly visits to an Ann Arbor elementary school to volunteer as a reading instructor and assistant. His outstanding efforts are to be commended.

Beginning in October, 2001, Brothers of our Lodge have begun volunteering at the "Saturday Academy" (described below) of the Ann Arbor Schools in 3-4 hour increments, providing assistance of at least two brothers at all times. Their names are listed here to recognize and applaud their efforts: Justin Krasnoff, PM, Karl W. Grube, Lowell Easton, Michael Kennedy, Vance Power, Brian Shorkey, and Sean S. Dykhouse, PM.

Masons have a long history of supporting learning, education and the public schools.

In several states, Masons established the first public schools. Many do not know that in 1817, Masons in Michigan provided the much needed support for the newly-created University of Michigan. Of the total amount subscribed to start the University, two-thirds came from the Masons in Michigan. This is still commemorated on the University's campus in the building named 'Mason Hall'.

In Michigan, Masons have been instrumental in the Juvenile Diabetes Program and the very successful Student Model Assistance Program designed to help teachers identify students who may be suffering from substance abuse. As such, it is fair to say that Masons have been involved with the school but not necessarily in the schools. When Masons announced the Beacon Project, all of that changed.

Beginning in January 2001, a statewide team of Mason volunteers in over 400 communities will begin working with local elementary schools. In capacities large and small, from mentoring to grounds keeping, Michigan Masons will work to improve the experience and educational opportunities of children in their communities.

The Michigan State Department of Education calls it wonderful. The Governor calls it outstanding. We call it the right move at the right time.

The genesis for the Beacon Project came from Bob Conley, the Grand Master of Michigan Masons in 2000/2001: "This pledge gives Masons the opportunity to make a difference and make themselves known. Too long in the background, and often shrouded in mystery, our Fraternity is eager to demonstrate its important role in society. Masons need to revitalize, to make real, the values and commitments they stand for and it's my job as Grand Master to support that goal. Beacon is the perfect vehicle for that," said Conley.

Over the next three years more than 200,000 volunteer hours will have been donated, the largest gift ever of its kind in Michigan. Join us. Affiliated Masonic organizations, families, and friends have all been encouraged to participate in this ambitious program.

Our Lodge

Ann Arbor Fraternity Lodge #262, Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan, welcomes the opportunity to serve the community through the Beacon Project.

Starting Fall, 2001, Ann Arbor Fraternity Lodge will make available members to volunteer at Ann Arbor Public Schools African American Academy. The Academy offers a Saturday program for students who are enrolled in grades 3 through 12. The purpose of the Academy is to improve the achievement of its students and to share the rich cultural heritage of the African tradition with the Ann Arbor community. The African American Academy is open to all Ann Arbor public school students. The Academy offers tutoring in academic subjects including English, mathematics, science and social studies, as well as culturally significant topics.

All Master Masons Are Welcome to Volunteer on this or any Future Beacon Effort!
Contact Seymour Greenstone, PM, #262 Beacon Coordinator, or Sean S. Dykhouse, PM for more information or to volunteer.
